The "Click it or Ticket" traffic initiative is coming back.
"Click it or Ticket" is a nationwide crackdown on those who don't wear their seatbelts. Because Massachusetts doesn't have a primary enforcement law, the police must pull you over for a different offense in order to ticket you for not wearing your seatbelt. This means that Massachusetts residents can expect to be scrutinized for every possible offense from speeding to expired inspection stickers so that police can be involved in the "Click it or Ticket" campaign.
Proponents of this campaign will claim this is a safety effort. However, there has never been any proof that this type of aggressive enforcement does anything other than bring in extra money. In reality, this campaign is all about revenue for the police. $1.8 million in federal grant money goes to the Governor's Highway Safety Bureau (GHSB) which distributes the money to the various police agencies in the state. Not only do these areas receive a share of the $1.8 million to pay their officers overtime to pull you over, they also get to collect the normal monetary amounts they receive from seatbelt tickets as well as from whatever ticket they saddle you with.
So, please be careful on the roads between the following dates. The police will be very aggressive in their pursuit of this grant and ticket money at your expense.
